Why Is It Called Asana Sadhana Dharma?

We have three main intentions for this training: Asana, Sadhana & Dharma

Asana
In the modern world Yoga & Asana are synonymous. We wish to unpack the power of asana practice through the lens of both tantric energetic management & modern functional movement. The intention is to understand the historical context of asana practice & how we can begin the process of integrating traditional Hatha Yoga with modern functional movement patterns. We will take the time to truely unpack human anatomy (physical & energetic); to understand how we can optimise asana to fit our unique physical bodies & energetic needs.

Sadhana
This is a the cultivation of a spiritual practice, a daily dedication to call divinity & our highest potential in life. Less so does this word point toward any specific methodology, but more so the intention through which our daily actions & practices are done. Ultimately, we aim to use the tools provided through hatha yoga to call in the joyous state of mind that is traditionally known as Yoga. Our enquiry will be into which practices are appropriate to our individual life circumstance, age, cultural background, capacity to practice, etc. alongside that of our students & community.

Dharma
As humanity advances the need for life purpose is becoming increasingly apparent. No longer are we willing to accept a lifestyle that serves someone else’s purpose. The Yoga tradition teaches that life purpose brings fulfilment, and misalignment with this purpose is the cause of disease and suffering. We call this life purpose Dharma, in a broader sense this entails a natural & effortless flow in life. A life that is lived in alignment with nature & its cycles. This is an enquiry into Jnana Yoga, in order to gain clarity around our own authentic offering & lifestyle.

Teaching Team

Aaron Petty

Hi, I’m Aaron Petty, the head teacher & co-founder of Om Som Yoga & Ayurveda.

I have accumulated over 1000 hours training across multiple fields of study and am registered with Yoga alliance at E-RYT500 & YACEP Levels.

My mission is to create a heart centred & well informed community of authentic Yoga practitioners/teachers in Melbourne; providing this community with an accessible, adaptable practice that meets their current circumstances & moves them toward their most authentic, healthful, resilient & vibrant self.

Throughout my life, Movement, Breath & Meditation have been a catalyst for change. Dedicated & consistent Yoga practice took me from an uninspired, depressed, anxious, overweight & injured tradesman to a happy, thriving, purpose driven business owner & lover of life.

I have been Meditating for 12 years now, and truely dedicated myself to the path of Yoga 6 years ago.
There’s been a huge amount of time spent studying with many of the worlds most influential & knowledgeable Yoga teachers. This includes study in modern movement, breathwork & meditation practice, functional anatomy, myofascial release, yin & restorative yoga, vedic counseling, vedanta, ayurveda, traditional hatha yoga, tantra & meditation.

Basically, I’ve put in the time to deeply understand the many possible approaches to Yoga, so that I can determine which practices actually work & share them with my community in the most accessible & relatable way possible.

Our modern lives are filled with so much stimulation, stress & discontent - its time we bring back true nourishment, purpose & human connection.

Paige Taylah

Hey, my name is Paige, and I am the studio manager and co-founder of Om Som Yoga & Ayurveda.

I first completed my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2017, when I was a sweet 19 year old looking for her life purpose. I never expected to be teaching or sharing Yoga, I just wanted to deepen my practice & immerse.

A few years later I met Aaron, our relationship was founded on Yogic philosophy and practice and we never looked back. I dedicated my time to teaching and sharing Yoga at the then, Level Up Yoga studio in Berwick and poured so much love and effort into improving the logistics, efficiency and consistency of the business. In 2021 we rebranded and re-opened our humble studio space as Om Som Yoga & Ayurveda.

I am responsible for extracting the creative ideas and deep Vedic wisdom out of Aaron’s mind and onto paper; compiling it in all the right boxes to meet Yoga Alliance requirements.

Within the trainings we offer, I take on the role of space holder. Whilst I share every now and then, my main purpose is making sure everyone (including Aaron), is well fed, hydrated and emotionally available. If you train with us, know that I will always be there to hold your hand, keep you grounded and present no matter what you experience.

Over the last few years I have expanded my knowledge in so many fields of the Vedic tradition, with Ayurveda catching my eye. I accumulated over 200 extra hours of Yoga study, along with 1200 hours of in-depth knowledge and practice of Ayurveda.

I share Ayurveda with reverence and deep passion. It is my lifestyle and in that way I share my embodied experience, allowing you to make small and sustainable changes that empower your life.

Who Is Tantric Hatha Yoga?

To understand this we must break it down into its parts.
The word Tantra can be broken down into two syllables “tan” & “tra”
Tan, when it made its way into the English language became “ten” as in extend, this speaks to our capacity for expansion. Tra as a root syllable means to protect or shelter.
Bringing these two syllables together points toward a system of knowledge that allows us to expand in a way that is safe or protected. Tantra is a system for energy management & a profound worldview.

The next word is Hatha which points toward something that is forceful or requires some effort.
Hatha speaks to our use of techniques such as Asana, pranayama, mantra, mudra & kriya.
Hatha Yoga is the ancient Yogic system of awakening to our fullest potential & life’s purpose. The Ancient Indian Science of Self-Realization, that allows us to integrate all aspects of our being & achieve greatness in every aspect of life.

Finally Yoga, this means to yoke or connect.
Just as we would yoke a horse & cart, we yoke our limited mind & ego based self to the limitless potential found in the universal self.
Yoga is a state of awareness that is beyond all limitations & mental movements.
By definition it is a practice of unified embrace. A practice of relationship & context for all relationships. Union of the opposing Masculine & Feminine energies within the individual. It is the heart's practice that lights the path to equanimous & harmonious living. Our unique, intimate embrace of life itself.

So in bringing these three components together we arrive at a system of techniques & philosophies that allows for safe & controlled expansion, stillness of the mind & a truly purposeful life. Our intention is to provide an understanding of Yoga through felt experience, not just intellect alone. When we begin to embody our Yoga practice, we can share our experience with other’s in an authentic way & ultimately be of the highest service to our community.
